The Winter of Love, an independent production, reflects the talent, richness and diversity in British film production. Directed by Shakila Taranum Maan, The Winter of love is now available on DVD.
Filmed entirely in Southall, the film tells the story of a Southall family. The Winter of Love transcends the normal conventions of the British Asian film, in this unsettling dark tale of intergenerational conflict and hypocrisy. Through the powerful voices and faces of British Asian talent, the characters deal with universal dilemmas that face us all.
Shakila Taranum Maan is another filmmaker ready to join the ranks of internationally acclaimed Asian women directors like Mira Nair, Deepa Mehta and Gurinder Chadha. Eastern Eye, Desi
When, prompted by the death of his brother, Shammi returns home to Southall, he reignites a number of unfinished stories, while provoking mixed emotions by his significant time away. Indifference, isolation, prostitution and murder all lead to major confrontations and reassessments. Atmospheric and effectively scored, this tale of one man's journey through a quasi-deserted city and the past nevertheless provides an insight into a little known London community. Time Out
Haunted by memories of his beloved, Shammi is reaching the end of the road. When he discovers his brother Paji has died, he knows the time has come to stop running. He returns home but in his intoxicated state, he is blind to the needs of his family. As time passes, dark family secrets manifest to reach a feverish pitch and explosive consequences. Shammi’s fears return with such ferocity if he runs now he will never stop. His worlds finally collide, forcing him into action, propelling him to commit an act of great sacrifice in order to save what family he has left.
The soundtrack to A Winter of Love was arranged by the noted composer Kuljit Bhamra (Bombay Dreams and Far Pavilions) and released on his record label Keda Records.
